Ordinary rooms

Almost nothing worth building gets built in the rooms that photograph well.

The real ones have a fan doing most of the climate control. A desk that came with the house. The neighbor's radio going through its afternoon routine somewhere behind the wall. In Ruiru, in Thika, in a thousand towns that never appear in startup photography, people are deep into the unglamorous middle of things — the fourth rewrite, the third rejection, the version nobody has seen.

There is a particular loneliness to it that no one photographs either. Not dramatic loneliness. The ordinary kind, where you have been talking to yourself about a project for so long that your own voice starts sounding like speculation.

That is the room this circle is for. Not the rooftop with the skyline — anyone can be interesting up there. The test of a place like this is whether it means anything on a Tuesday afternoon in an ordinary room, when the work is neither finished nor failing, just unfinished, and the only reason to keep going is that someone might want the thing to exist.

We think they will. That is the whole bet.
